We had several students in our advisement class fail at least one course during first semester. This is not unusual for 9th graders. The first grading period is always an eye-opening experience for students, and they usually learn to apply better study habits and grades improve as we transition into 2nd semester.
Please know that it is vital for students to stay caught up on credits. If they failed a required course, they will need to retake that class in order to graduate. It is best for them to make up failures in a summer school setting.
Summer school will be held at CCHS - Monday through Thursday during June - Cost is $270. We offer a less expensive credit recovery course called Writer's Workshop during the school day but simply do not
have the licenses or staff necessary to accommodate everyone. Seniors are given priority in this course. At the current time, all slots are full.
It is very stressful for students when they try to double-up on a class they have failed during the school day. For example, some try to retake English 9 and English 10 during their tenth grade year to make-up a failed class. This stress is amplified when students have failed more than one course in 9th grade and try to retake 2 failed classes in the same year. This is quite a load and sometimes results in tremendous frustration that can eventually lead to drop-out.
Please review the graduation requirements with your child and discuss the importance of making school a priority and trying to pass all classes. If they have failed a class or two first semester, I strongly encourage you to make plans for them to attend summer school so they can begin their tenth grade year all caught up with their ninth grade credits.
